A&Es overflowing with injuries, heat exhaustion, illnesses

Accident and Emergency Departments (A&E) are experiencing high patient volumes in the evenings, as SHSO (State Health Services Organisation) notes that many citizens, especially those with minor injuries, sprains, or fever, wait until nightfall before seeking medical attention.

“In recent days, we have noticed that many citizens may sustain injuries in the morning at the beach and then go to A&E in the evening to receive the necessary care,” SHSO spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou told philenews.

“This is also evident from the number of cases seen by our A&Es, with the Nicosia General Hospital being a prime example. On Monday, it recorded a total of 122 adult cases, 46 of which presented during the night shift.”

Usually, “and that’s why this particular shift is reinforced, high patient numbers are recorded in the afternoon hours. Now, we observe that, especially for minor injuries sustained at the beach or a fever, citizens wait until nightfall before seeking medical attention.”

Charilaou emphasised that this phenomenon “creates problems because, among other things, we do not have doctors of all specialties in the night shift, leading to congestion, delay, and overall dysfunction. For instance, a problem occurred last night in the operation of the Nicosia A&E.”

“We seek the cooperation of citizens. They should seek help at the time of an accident, whether at the beach or elsewhere, and not wait until evening.”

At A&Es, Charilaou said, “we continue to experience an increased flow of patients with symptoms of heat exhaustion, cases of coronavirus or other infections, and of course, minor accidents and injuries from various activities at the beach or in the mountains, where our fellow citizens spend their summer holidays.”
