Increased police presence in Agios Dometios amid tensions in buffer zone

Violations by the occupying forces in the buffer zone near the area of Agios Dometios have heightened the vigilance of the police authorities in the Republic of Cyprus.

Following the recent incident on the Green Line last Monday, the Cyprus Police have taken measures to increase patrols in a specific area of the suburban outskirts of Nicosia.

These emergency measures have been notably evident since last Thursday on roads adjacent to the Green Line and near the “House of Maria,” where the occupying forces attempted to install a structure consisting of tall poles and an electronic device (rotating camera with an antenna).

Motorized patrols regularly move along roads near the Klimo River and between the Agios Dometios barricade and the old road leading to the Gregoriou school. The presence of patrols is particularly noticeable during the evening hours, with their beacons switched on.

According to Phileleftheros, the entire issue has been of concern to the top administrative layers of the Cyprus Police. The specific measures began to be implemented last Thursday, following explicit and detailed directives from the leadership of the Force.

The headquarters of the Police Force took into consideration the need for preventive surveillance of the area due to the provocative stance of the occupying army and the citizens’ sense of security.

After recent actions by Turkish soldiers, several residents of Agios Dometios expressed concerns about their safety.

Residents of the area have reported incidents not covered by the media. A notable event occurred last May, when a car coming from the occupied area menacingly approached the municipality’s spraying crew, carrying out work on the Klimo River with the accompaniment of a UN peacekeeper.

The municipal staff had left the area in fear and reported the incident.
