A 24-year-old man was arrested for public disorder offenses following violent clashes after the football match between AEK Larnaca and Omonia Nicosia on Friday night.
The disturbance occurred around 9:45 PM, when approximately 50 AEK supporters, from the eastern side of the stadium, moved threateningly towards Omonia fans on the northern side. They attempted to shift mobile metal barriers, which had been installed as part of security measures for the match.
A riot control unit from the Mobile Unit of the Special Forces (MMAD) intervened, quickly suppressing the violence. The police arrested the 24-year-old on charges of public disorder, hiding his identity, assaulting an officer, and resisting lawful arrest.
The suspect was taken to the Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department, where he was interrogated, formally charged, and later released. He is scheduled to appear before court for the case.
During the unrest, a female officer from the MMAD was injured after a mobile metal barrier fell on her. She was transferred to Larnaca General Hospital, where medical tests revealed swelling around her right eye. The officer received treatment and was later discharged.
Investigations are ongoing, led by the Larnaca CID.
