A 16-year-old boy died on Sunday afternoon when the unregistered racing motorbike he was riding hit an Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) pole in Argaka, in Paphos district, police said.
Giorgos Hadjiioannou, from Agia Marina Chrysochous, lost control at about 3.25pm on Archbishop Makarios III Avenue, in the direction of Grivas Digenis Avenue, according to a police statement. The bike hit the pavement, then the pole, and came to a stop on the road. He was seriously injured and taken to Polis Chrysochous Hospital, where he was found to be already dead.
Assistant Paphos Police Director Michalis Nikolaou said the boy was travelling west and the motorbike overturned after striking the left-hand pavement. A helmet was found at the scene, he said, but it is not yet known whether the boy was wearing it.
Police cordoned off the scene. Paphos Traffic Police and Polis Chrysochous police station are continuing their inquiries.
