UN agency warns of severe baby formula shortage in Gaza

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has raised the alarm over critical shortages of infant formula in the Gaza Strip.

More than 8,500 infants depend on powdered milk distributed through UNRWA, but current supplies are severely depleted.

One of the few remaining operational UNRWA health centres in southern Gaza has only six boxes of infant formula left in stock.

“With over 200,000 people relying on this centre for primary healthcare, the severe shortage of supplies puts many, including infants, at serious risk”, the UN agency said.

The organisation stressed that immediate humanitarian aid delivery and a ceasefire are essential to save lives.

Despite limited resources and overwhelming needs, UNRWA said it would continue supporting the most vulnerable in Khan Younis, providing winter clothing and hygiene items to minors at the UNRWA Rehabilitation Centre for Visually Impaired Children.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has worsened dramatically since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas in October 2023, which has claimed more than 45,000 lives, with an Amnesty International report describing Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide on December 5.
