The UK and the US once again urged their citizens to leave Lebanon on Saturday, amidst escalating fears of a potential war between Israel and the Lebanese organization Hezbollah.
The US Embassy in Beirut urged American citizens to depart “with any available airline ticket.” Despite numerous flights to and from the capital being canceled or postponed, “options are available,” stated the embassy in its announcement. “We encourage those wishing to leave Lebanon to book any available ticket, even if the flight does not depart immediately or follow their preferred route,” it added.
In a separate announcement, the UK Foreign Secretary also urged British citizens to leave “now” while “commercial flights are available.”
“Tensions have increased and the situation could deteriorate quickly (…) My message to British citizens is clear: leave now,” stated David Lammy.
The Foreign Office requested that British nationals remaining in Lebanon inform the local consular authorities to stay updated on the evolving situation. According to London, “military personnel” will soon be deployed “in the area” to support British embassies and assist British citizens. Royal Air Force helicopters will also be “on standby” to intervene if necessary.
“The expansion of the conflict is in no one’s interest; the consequences could be catastrophic,” emphasized David Lammy, reiterating his desire for de-escalation and a “diplomatic solution.”
