Shanghai relocates 280,000 residents as tropical cyclone and tsunami threaten city

Relevant News

Shanghai has relocated more than 280,000 people and cancelled hundreds of flights and ferry services as the city faces simultaneous threats from a tropical cyclone and tsunami warnings.

Tropical cyclone Co-May made landfall in the port city of Zhoushan in Zhejiang province during the early hours of Wednesday, followed by tsunami warnings triggered by a powerful earthquake off Russia’s far east.

The dual threats raised concerns of larger-than-expected storm surges along the Chinese coast, prompting authorities in Shanghai and other Yangtze River delta cities to implement extensive precautionary measures.

Whilst winds from Co-May were weaker than typical typhoon conditions, Chinese authorities opted for comprehensive evacuation and transport restrictions across the financial hub.

The convergence of the tropical cyclone’s arrival with tsunami warnings from the Russian earthquake created heightened concern for coastal surge impacts along China’s eastern seaboard.

Flight operations and ferry services remained suspended as authorities prioritised public safety amid the twin weather and seismic threats.
