At least 20 people were killed and dozens more trapped after two powerful earthquakes struck Myanmar on Friday, causing significant structural damage and sending tremors across neighbouring countries.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported two consecutive earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 6.4 magnitude, with the epicentre located approximately 50 kilometres east of Monywa in central Myanmar.

The historic Ava Bridge in Mandalay collapsed during the quake, while a mosque in the same city was destroyed, accounting for the reported fatalities, according to local media.

The impact extended beyond Myanmar’s borders, with tremors felt in Thailand and China’s southwest Yunnan province. China’s Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) reported the larger quake at magnitude 7.9, according to Xinhua news agency.

In Bangkok, officials suspended metro and rail services after the tremors were felt across Thailand. AFP reported that at least 43 workers were trapped following the collapse of an under-construction skyscraper in the Thai capital.

Emergency response efforts are underway across the affected regions as authorities assess the full extent of the damage and casualties.
