Prominent intellectual Noam Chomsky has been hospitalised in Brazil, it has emerged, following a stroke he suffered last in June.

Chomsky’s absence from public life over the last year sparked speculations about his health.

On Monday, Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo, reported that the 95-year-old American professor has remained silent on the war in Gaza despite calls from supporters and the media, which was due to a stroke he suffered in the United States.

According to the article, Chomsky is experiencing difficulty with speech, and he has numbness on his right side.

American doctors reportedly advised that no further treatment options were available to them, prompting Chomsky’s wife, Valeria, to fly him to São Paulo, where the couple owns a residence, so he could receive specialised treatment.

Chomsky was admitted to an intensive care unit upon his arrival and is now said to be in a regular room, with his condition having improved significantly.

He is receiving daily visits from a team of specialists, including a neurologist, speech therapist, and a pulmonologist.
