A 46-year-old mother and her 6-year-old daughter, both from Ukraine, were found dead after a fire at their home in Belgium, sending shockwaves through the country. The Leuven Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed the case is being investigated as a double homicide, as both victims sustained stab wounds, and the fire at their residence appears to have been intentionally set.
Firefighters were alerted to the blaze around 9:30 AM on Saturday. Upon arrival, they observed heavy smoke emanating from the first-floor windows. The fire was brought under control by approximately 10:20 AM. However, when firefighters entered the apartment, they discovered the two deceased individuals.
The mother had already succumbed to her injuries. Her six-year-old daughter was found unconscious; resuscitation efforts were attempted, but she ultimately also succumbed. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, both victims had multiple stab wounds, leading to the double murder investigation.
Family Background and Community Response
The family had moved to Belgium from Ukraine three years ago, likely due to the ongoing conflict. The father is currently serving on the front lines in Ukraine. The mother also had a 16-year-old son, who was at school at the time of the fire and was not harmed. The teenager is now under the care of specialized support services.
The tragic news has sparked a wave of grief within the community. The municipality will open a book of condolences at the town hall starting Tuesday, after the three-day holiday, for those wishing to leave a message. At the little girl’s school, the administration and psychosocial staff have already informed her classmates, and discussions about the tragedy will follow in all classes after the holiday.
The investigation is fully underway, and authorities have not yet announced any suspects or information leading to the perpetrator’s identity.
