Middle East: Nasrallah’s successor reportedly assassinated

Relevant News

Hashem Safi al-Din, who reportedly succeeded Hassan Nasrallah as the leader of Hezbollah, has been killed in an Israeli attack on Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh on Friday, according to Al-Arabiya and other Arab media outlets. However, these reports remain unconfirmed by official sources.

The attack allegedly also claimed the lives of Iranian Revolutionary Guard officers, the same sources reported.

Al-Arabiya, citing senior Hezbollah sources, stated that since the Friday attack on Dahiyeh, the man who took over Hezbollah’s leadership after the strike against Nasrallah has shown no signs of life.

The Israeli military reportedly confirmed that their target was the elimination of Safi al-Din, believed to be hiding in a Hezbollah safehouse in the Shiite area of Dahiyeh, south of Beirut.

The strike reportedly used the same weaponry – bunker-buster bombs – that killed Nasrallah.

Safi al-Din, who has been on the U.S. terrorist list since 2017, had unofficially assumed Hezbollah’s leadership following Nasrallah’s death.

He had long headed Hezbollah’s Jihad organisation and military management groups, maintaining close ties with Tehran.

As of now, there has been no official confirmation of Safi al-Din’s death from Hezbollah. If confirmed, this would mark the first time in the history of Israel-Hezbollah conflicts that Tel Aviv has eliminated both the leader and successor of the Iran-backed organisation within such a short timeframe.
