Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has issued a stark warning to Israel against launching an attack on Lebanon as tensions escalate following a deadly rocket strike on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
During a conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, Pezeshkian stated, “The Zionist regime (Israel) will make a big mistake with severe consequences if it attacks Lebanon,” according to the Iranian President’s website.
Pezeshkian officially assumed office on Sunday after receiving approval from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and is set to be sworn in by parliament on Tuesday.
Israel has vowed to retaliate after a deadly strike on a football field in Majdal Shams, an Arab Druze town in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, which resulted in the deaths of 12 children.
Israel has accused Lebanon’s Hezbollah of being responsible for the attack, a claim that the group denies.
In his conversation with Macron, Pezeshkian accused Israel of “violating all international frameworks and laws in its crimes against the Palestinians.”
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, warned on Sunday that any new military “adventures”, as he called it, by Israel in Lebanon could lead to “unpredictable consequences” and a broader scope of instability, insecurity, and war in the region.
Kanaani stated that Israel accuses Hezbollah “to divert attention from its mass crimes” in the Gaza Strip.
He added that Israel “has no moral authority to comment” on the deaths in the Golan Heights, which Israel seized from Syria in 1967 and later annexed, a move not recognised by the United Nations.
The Islamic Republic hailed Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel that sparked the Gaza war but denied any involvement.
