The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas’s political bureau, in Tehran, where he had traveled for the inauguration of Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, has caused a stir.
According to the Saudi news agency Al-Hadath, the assassination was carried out with a guided missile targeting Haniyeh’s location in Tehran. The missile struck its target at 2:00 a.m. local time, the newspaper reported.
US reaction
According to MEGA correspondent Petros Kasfikis’ report, “there has been no reaction yet from either the White House or the State Department. Analysts say that this particular strike will not be a critical blow to Hamas because similar strikes have been carried out in the past, and Hamas’s operational capability has continued and, in some cases, been strengthened.”
He added, “It is not a critical blow. It is a strike that, if proven to be from Israel, has its significance. The strike took place in Iran, Israel’s traditional adversary, and the Hamas leader had previously met with Iran’s leader. The top priority is to prevent the crisis from escalating.”
