Guterres emphasised, via X, that “A school turned shelter for around 12,000 people was hit by Israeli airstrikes again… Six of our UNRWA colleagues are among those killed.”

He described the situation in Gaza as “completely unacceptable” and demanded an immediate end to these “dramatic violations of international humanitarian law.”

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) confirmed that six of its staff members were killed in two air strikes on a school-turned-shelter in central Gaza. This is the deadliest incident for UNRWA staff since the war’s onset on October 7, 2023.

The agency specified that those killed included the UNRWA shelter director and other staff providing assistance to the displaced.

Earlier yesterday, the Israeli military announced an air strike on a Hamas command and control centre in Nuseirat, central Gaza.

UNRWA countered that the school had been bombed five times since the war began, serving as a shelter for approximately 12,000 displaced people, primarily women and children.

The Hamas government’s information secretariat stated that the Israeli bombing killed 18 people, including UN staff.

The Israeli military maintains it takes measures to avoid civilian casualties, accusing Hamas of using civilians as human shields, a claim Hamas denies.
