As the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan deteriorates, the European Union has announced that it has made tens of millions of euros available to organisations operating in the country.

Approximately €125 million will be allocated to relief organisations operating in Afghanistan to prevent the risk of famine, the European Commission announced yesterday in Brussels.

This amount will primarily be used to provide food, shelter, health care, drinking water, and access to basic services, especially sewerage systems.

According to the press release, another €11 million will be allocated to Pakistan to provide assistance to Afghan refugees and to prepare for natural disasters.

Meanwhile, around €10 million is designated for humanitarian organisations in Iran, which also care for Afghan refugees.

EU humanitarian aid to Afghanistan is estimated at €1.8 billion since 1994. In 2023, almost €160 million was disbursed.

The situation in Afghanistan is among the most serious humanitarian crises in the world.

According to the Commission, nearly 24 million people depend on humanitarian aid.

More than 15 million people face acute food insecurity.
