Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan flew to the United States on Tuesday after Romanian authorities lifted their travel restrictions, despite ongoing criminal proceedings against them.
The dual British-American nationals departed from Bucharest’s Băneasa airport on a private jet bound for Fort Lauderdale.
Romania’s anti-organised crime unit Diicot stated the brothers remain “under judicial supervision” and must “appear before the judicial authorities at every summons.” The agency warned that violating imposed obligations “may lead to a higher custodial measure.”
Local media reported the Tates are expected to return to Romania in March for a scheduled court hearing.
The brothers face serious charges in Romania including rape, sex with a minor, human trafficking and money laundering following their December 2022 arrest. In August, prosecutors launched a second investigation accusing the pair of forming an organised criminal group to sexually exploit women. Romanian authorities allege they used the “loverboy method” to coerce 34 women into creating pornographic content, generating approximately $3 million in revenue.
Both men have consistently denied all allegations.
The timing of their departure has raised questions about potential political influence. The Tates are vocal supporters of US President Donald Trump, whose administration includes figures who have publicly criticised their detention. Donald Trump Jr previously described their detention as “absolute insanity,” while JD Vance, now US Vice President, appeared on a pro-Tate podcast.
Romanian Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu confirmed Trump’s special envoy Richard Grenell discussed the brothers’ travel ban with him at the Munich Security Conference, though he denied any “form of pressure” was applied. Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu similarly rejected suggestions of US intervention.
Four British women who have accused Andrew Tate of sexual abuse expressed distress upon learning of his departure. In a joint statement, they said: “It is clear that he will now not face criminal prosecution for his alleged crimes in Romania. He will use it as an opportunity to harass further and intimidate witnesses and his accusers.”
The Tates also face a separate extradition request from British authorities over sexual aggression allegations dating to 2012, though Romanian courts have ruled the proceedings in Romania must conclude first.
Andrew Tate, 38, a former professional kickboxer, has amassed over 10 million followers on X despite being banned from numerous social media platforms for misogynistic content and hate speech.
