Zero VAT to return on select essential items

Cyprus will reintroduce targeted anti-inflation measures, including zero VAT on essential items, Finance Minister Makis Keravnos announced on Thursday following a meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides.

“We have agreed to reinstate targeted support measures against rising prices,” Keravnos told reporters after the meeting.

He specified that zero VAT would apply to baby diapers, adult diapers, baby milk, feminine hygiene products, fruits, and vegetables.

The decision is expected to be finalised at the next Cabinet meeting, the minister added.

This move comes amid pressure from coalition partners DIKO, EDEK, and DEPA, who have been pushing for action to address the cost of living crisis affecting many households.

The government had previously cited improving economic indicators as a reason for discontinuing support measures.
