State and Kition dispute over Larnaca marina remains unresolved

Larnaca port’s operations remain hampered nearly a month after the termination of the Kition Ocean Holdings contract, with equipment handover and worker recruitment facing delays.

The state ended its partnership with Kition over the mega-investment project in Larnaca. However, despite the Ministry of Transport’s claim of state ownership of port and marina equipment, the transfer is stalled due to a missing asset list from Kition.

“In consultation with Kition, we are trying to find ways to complete the transfer of some equipment, which is deemed the most essential” Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, said to philenews.

The effort is focused on acquiring the two large cranes and two scales, which are crucial for the smooth operation of the port.

“The port continues to operate at a reduced capacity due to the lack of cranes. Everything else is on track, and it’s just this issue that remains,” the Minister noted.

He expressed optimism about other aspects of the transition, with worker recruitment from the Larnaca and Famagusta Development Company is “a matter of days away.”

The Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO) raised concerns about the recruitment delay during a meeting with the minister.

Vafeades, according to a PEO announcement, explained that “it was necessary to discuss and settle several outstanding issues and matters, but he assured us that we are at the end of the road.”

Separately, Vafeades will meet Larnaca’s mayor today to discuss the formation of a committee to monitor the port and marina development’s implementation.
