How has the evolving legal landscape influenced the service offerings of modern law firms?

The evolving legal landscape has significantly influenced the service offerings of modern law firms, driving them to adapt and expand beyond traditional legal advice. With increasing regulatory complexities, globalization, and technological advancements, law firms now provide multi-disciplinary solutions that integrate legal expertise with strategic business consulting. They offer specialized services in areas such as data privacy and artificial intelligence (AI) to address the growing concerns of businesses in a digital age. Additionally, the ever-evolving landscape has led law firms to adopt more efficient, client-centric approaches. Emphasizing collaboration, many law firms are forming alliances to deliver comprehensive solutions. This shift not only enhances their value proposition but also aligns with the dynamic needs of modern businesses, ensuring they remain competitive and compliant in an ever-changing legal environment.

Reflecting these needs, S.A. Evangelou & Co LLC, an independent law firm in Cyprus, is a member of PricewaterhouseCoopers International Limited (PwCIL) and its Global PwC Legal Business Solutions Network, one of the largest legal networks in the world by geographic coverage, with more than 4,000 lawyers in over 100 countries.

Being a member of the PwC Global Legal Network allows us to bring together the right mix of lawyers, consultants, and financial advisers to help clients develop efficient and sustainable solutions. It further enables our clients to have a single point of contact for their multi-disciplinary and cross-border affairs.

Since the establishment of our law firm, we have gone through significant evolution, driven by advancements in legal frameworks and technology, as well as a constant aim to stay ahead of client needs. In addition to our core areas of practice, such as corporate, commercial law, M&A, private client (succession and trusts), and real estate legal work, we have expanded our services over the years to encompass competition law, employment law, intellectual property law, financial services, data privacy, security, and AI. We offer comprehensive financial legal services and regulatory compliance support for financial institutions, funds, investment firms, EMIs, PIs, and other regulated entities, while staying ahead of international developments. For example, we stand ready to provide support on various new EU laws, including the AI Act, NIS2, and DORA.

What should be the response of law firms to new clients’ and people’s needs?

Moving in the direction of transparency and sustainability, increased regulation has resulted in a more complex global business environment in which multinational corporations operate. Clients seek integrated, multi-disciplinary, and cross-border advisory services from law firms, going beyond traditional legal services.

To tackle complex needs, our international status as a member of the PwC Network enables us to serve as a unified point of contact for diverse and international matters. Our people constantly expand their knowledge and experience by participating in international projects through secondments or active involvement in the Network’s Working Groups. We are committed to ensuring our people are well-trained and knowledgeable by offering complementary training programs to supplement their expertise. For instance, a group of our lawyers recently became certified Artificial Intelligence Governance Professionals by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). Additionally, the use of advanced technologies enables our team to focus on more valuable activities and upskilling opportunities.

The strategic collaboration of our Network with the Harvey AI legal tool and the development of the ChatPwC AI tool demonstrate our commitment to innovation and improving both client and employee satisfaction. Integrating AI into our practice allows us to focus on complex tasks, enhancing productivity and reducing costs, which makes high-quality legal services more accessible while creating a more enjoyable work environment. Technology undeniably supports our mission, streamlining operations and enhancing the client experience.

What are your thoughts regarding legal tech and the future of legal services?

The legal profession is undergoing significant changes. Its future will not simply be about knowing the law but about navigating clients through a constantly changing landscape and managing unfamiliar situations. As noted earlier, we aim to stay ahead of technological advancements, utilizing various tools provided by our Network.

To address clients’ needs innovatively, our Network has developed the Legal Managed Services offering, delivering human-led, tech-powered solutions, which we believe will be at the forefront of future legal services. By combining the expertise of a law firm with technology, we act as a seamless extension of our clients’ in-house teams, enabling them to manage their routine tasks efficiently while focusing on strategic priorities.

Generative AI will continue to revolutionize our work, allowing us to streamline routine tasks such as legal research, document analysis, contract drafting, and due diligence. This will accelerate service delivery, improve quality, and create a more competitive legal landscape. By 2030, we expect AI-infused contract lifecycle management (CLM) systems to become universal, offering a central source of truth for contracts and enabling organizations to manage their core assets more effectively. As a result, the legal services market will expand beyond traditional law firms, requiring legal professionals to embrace technology and join interdisciplinary teams with new skill sets, including prompt engineers, data scientists, and operational experts.
