Consumers will have access to e-kalathi, an electronic platform for comparing supermarket prices, before the Christmas shopping season begins, Energy Minister George Papanastasiou told the parliamentary Finance Committee.

The minister said the project will be completed this month and will undergo a 15-20 day pilot period to address any potential issues.

“We will launch it before the Christmas shopping period”, he stated, explaining that the delay was due to tender procedures.

Responding to criticism of the Consumer Protection Service, Papanastasiou defended the agency’s work, stating that “media accusations from a specific source are unfair to the service”.

Regarding fuel prices, the minister acknowledged current limitations in fuel monitoring, noting that traditional control methods are no longer adequate.

He announced that a new modern system featuring algorithms to detect sudden price changes is being developed. “We will be able to quickly identify sharp price fluctuations and investigate them,” he concluded.
