The president of the Paphos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, George Mais, has expressed deep concern about the delays in the first phase of the Paphos-Polis Chrysochous road construction project.
The Chamber is urgently seeking a resolution to the issues between the involved parties to prevent further setbacks or delays in this vital project for the region, particularly the Polis Chrysochous area.
During a site meeting with the House Transport Committee on April 12, the Director of Public Works revealed that the project is significantly behind schedule, with only 30% completion, and the contractor has requested a substantial 33-month extension.
The project, valued at €75 million, was originally slated for completion by November, a timeline that now seems unattainable.
Mais emphasised the existence of significant financial and technical challenges, underscoring the need for a swift and mutually agreeable solution. He appealed to the Minister of Transport and the contractor to approach negotiations constructively.
Regarding the second phase of the road project, from Stroubi to Polis Chrysochous, the Chamber reiterated its stance that it should proceed independently of any delays in the first phase.
To expedite the overall project, the Chamber has proposed dividing the second phase into two sections, starting construction from Polis Chrysochous to Stroubi. This approach would provide additional time to address the environmental challenges in the Skoulli area.
The Minister of Transport has assured the Chamber that they will examine all possibilities to keep the project moving forward.
Mais concluded by stating that the Chamber will closely scrutinise developments and timelines, refusing to accept further delays or objections that could hinder this critical infrastructure development for the region.
