Finance Minister Makis Keravnos expressed doubts about the future of the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), a major electricity link project between Cyprus, Greece and Israel, citing serious political obstacles from Turkey.

Speaking on Tuesday at the annual general meeting of the Association of Cyprus Tourist Enterprises, Keravnos said his concerns about the project had been confirmed by expert studies.

“I cannot say I am optimistic, especially when there are still very serious political obstacles, namely those posed by Turkey,” Keravnos said.

When asked about communication with his Greek counterpart regarding the project’s progress, Keravnos said he had not received any official response, as the matter falls under the Ministry of Energy’s jurisdiction.

The minister confirmed ongoing dialogue between Cyprus and Greece, though the final decision would be made at the government level.

A U.S. consultancy firm’s study reportedly advised against Cyprus investing in the project’s share capital. Keravnos said the government was considering the consultants’ assessments in its decision-making process.
