Electricity workers call emergency meeting over power supply concerns

Trade unions representing workers at the Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC) announced an emergency meeting for Monday amid growing concerns over power supply reliability and energy sector policies.

The meeting, scheduled for February 24 at EAC headquarters in Strovolos, Nicosia, will address what unions describe as “serious issues” affecting the electricity sector.

Sources within EAC say workers are increasingly concerned about service disruptions affecting consumers and the wider Cypriot economy. They attribute these problems to previous policy decisions and new proposals that allegedly prioritise private interests over public benefit.

Union representatives indicated their readiness to take “dynamic action” to prevent the implementation of policies they claim would increase energy costs for domestic consumers and compromise power supply security.

The four EAC unions will convene their general councils at the authority’s central offices on 11 Amfipoleos Street to evaluate recent developments in the electricity sector.
