Black Friday expectations remain low in Cyprus retail sector

Cyprus retailers and consumers are approaching this year’s Black Friday, which is on November 28, with tempered expectations, as previous years’ data indicate limited interest in the shopping event that has become a high-volume tradition elsewhere.

While Black Friday generates intense competition and substantial revenue in other countries, the phenomenon remains subdued in Cyprus, with many businesses viewing it more as an obligation than an opportunity, market sources told Phileleftheros.

The significant Black Friday revenue is essentially concentrated in one or two large retail chains, which capture most of the turnover, while small and medium enterprises remain marginalised, a retail sector representative said.

Average discounts in Cyprus typically range between 20-30%, far below the dramatic price reductions seen in foreign markets. Small business owners, who represent the vast majority of Cyprus retailers, report being unable to offer deeper discounts due to narrow profit margins and high operating costs.

Current regulations present additional challenges for retailers. Under Cypriot law, Black Friday advertised prices must correspond to the lowest price offered in the previous 30 days, forcing businesses to either avoid any discounts before the event or accept even smaller margins.

If an electronic device is already selling at a reduced price of €400 before Black Friday, then to promote it as a special offer on the day, its price must drop below €400, for example.

Timing also works against the event’s success. Black Friday falls at month’s end before salary payments and just weeks before Christmas, when both consumers and retailers traditionally focus on the holiday shopping season.

Historical data shows that electronics retailers typically record the highest sales during the event, while other retail sectors see minimal impact.

Most businesses are directing their attention toward Christmas sales, while consumers remain cautious, waiting to see whether meaningful discounts will materialise or if Black Friday will again be primarily a marketing exercise.
