Child benefit expanded to cover 17,000 more families

Around 17,000 additional families and more than 23,000 children will become eligible for child benefit under an expansion announced by President Nikos Christodoulides, which will increase both payments and income thresholds.

In a social media post, Christodoulides said income limits would rise for all families.

The maximum annual income threshold will increase to €90,000 for families with three dependent children and €100,000 for those with four children.

Families with five or more dependent children will continue to face no income threshold, following a change introduced in 2025.

Christodoulides said the new rules would also address longstanding problems in the system, including cases where families lost all support after a small increase in household income.

The government is also expanding its tuition fee subsidy for children aged up to four years and four months. Around 2,000 additional families and 2,800 children are expected to benefit from the change.

Christodoulides linked the new measures to the performance of the economy, arguing that growth allows the government to pursue targeted policies in education, healthcare and welfare.

“The government’s goal is to continually increase disposable income and return the benefits of economic growth to society,” he said.
