They won’t make year’s end for tax reform

The debate on the tax reform bills begins in Parliament on Friday, but it’s highly unlikely to be wrapped up before year’s end.

And that’s down to the delay in submitting the legislation from the Finance Ministry to Parliament. These are complex and difficult bills that require thorough examination. Even if the Finance Committee members met every single day, they wouldn’t finish the discussion.

Rather than having a botched reform forced through to plenary, it would be better for the legislation to be put to a vote in its entirety in January 2026. Either way, the taxes won’t be imposed on the first day of the year.
