After the pillows and sheets that patients’ families are occasionally asked to bring to public hospitals (most often because no one has made sure to supply clean and sterilised ones to each ward’s storage area), now, employees at public hospitals are asking relatives to also provide water.
The reason, as they explain, is the unsuitability of certain water dispensers installed in specific wards, as well as the cups, which, as they inform relatives, are reused even though they are single-use.
A citizen filed a complaint, expressing his surprise at the situation as well as his anxiety, asking, “If we have to worry about our health and safety in the hospital, what exactly are we supposed to do outside the hospital?”
The citizen reported that, following the instructions given by the staff in the ward where his elderly relative is being treated, he approached other patients and relatives to verify whether he had correctly understood the staff’s instructions.
He certainly found that most had brought bottled water to the hospital, with some of them having also brought plates and cutlery, since they did not feel safe after being informed that the hospital water was unsafe.
We raised the issue with SHSO for investigation… We said that the Organisation is trying to come out on top regarding its sustainability, but (in the Cypriot language), to put it bluntly, not even water?
