Monday’s National Council meeting fell on the anniversary of the death of the Republic of Cyprus’s first President, Archbishop Makarios (3 August 1977). AKEL’s General Secretary brought up the anniversary just before the session got underway, while everyone was still waiting for President Christodoulides to walk in.
Fidias Panayiotou turned to the room and asked whether anyone there had actually met Makarios. Every single person said no, including former President Nicos Anastasiades. Just as everyone had settled on the idea that nobody in the room had known him, DIKO leader Nicolas Papadopoulos piped up. “I’m the only one who met him,” Papadopoulos said, leaving the whole room baffled. “Of course I met him, he’s the one who baptised me!” Papadopoulos was born on 22 April 1973.
