Cross-party backing for Cyprus’s apartheid state

Relevant News

Whatever comes of this fresh push on the Cyprus problem, it’s worth noting that the National Council’s Joint Communiqué is setting the agenda, at least on the home front. It’s no 2009, let’s be clear, but every single party, including the “anti-federalist” ELAM, has voiced its support for the President, who wants talks to pick up “from where they left off at Crans-Montana.” That last phrase sits in quotation marks not because it appears in the Communiqué, but because President Christodoulides has been repeating it, wherever he goes and to whoever’s listening, for years now.

None of this is new. It’s not the first time the National Council has rallied behind the President on the negotiations. Sometimes there were objections, sometimes there weren’t. But this time will go down on record as the moment every party, without a single exception, backed talks built on the Bizonal Bicommunal Federation rather than a solution that actually sets Cyprus free. The parties are backing the President’s “efforts” toward an apartheid state, without setting a single condition on freedom, return, or justice. We repeat: including ELAM.
