Two year old boy in Paphos not crying from abuse but fever, police say following social media reports

A series of allegations made on a number of platforms regarding the possible abuse of a toddler in Paphos, as he had been crying for hours, catching the attention of neighbours, seem to have mobilised police who visited the home of the boy, not establishing any proof of either abuse or neglect.

Following an investigation, authorities said the 2 year old was down with a virus, with symptoms including fever, which caused him to repeatedly cry.

In a relevant statement, thety also refuted claims that they failed to respond to such a possibly serious incident, noting that officers were quick on the scene, with members of Hope of Children and an interpreter also contributing, as the incident involved a family of third country nationals.

Medical examinations did not ascertain any evidence that indicated abuse or neglect of the minor.

Police point out that concerned citizens should and must come forward, when they believe a child might be in danger.

They also note however that publisising home incidents and rushing to conclusions without previously checking the facts, is likely to lead to the unfair targeting of individuals and families, as well as the work of competent services.

‘Child protection is a priority, as are family dignity and privacy’, police said.
