Former Democratic Rally (DISY) leader Averof Neofytou announced on Wednesday that he will seek the party’s backing for the 2028 presidential election, asking its members for a vote of confidence.
In a written statement, Neofytou said Cyprus needed a change of course and leadership that understands how the state works, takes decisions and delivers results. He said he wanted to offer his knowledge and experience to tackle the country’s challenges, regardless of the political cost and guided by the interests of society.
He pointed to rising prices and the cost of electricity and fuel, which he said were squeezing households and businesses, while young people struggled to pay rent and owning a home had become an unattainable dream.
On the Cyprus problem, he warned that stalemate carried new risks. “Cyprus cannot and will not remain divided,” he said.
Neofytou said DISY had played a decisive role in what had been achieved for the country in difficult times, recalling the struggles, successes and disappointments he had shared with its members.
He said he sought a new social contract with citizens based on listening, acting and being accountable, which would guide efforts to unite the party and win society’s trust. He said DISY should seek a change in how the country is governed through political alliances, giving a voice to civil society.
His stated aims were a strong economy that creates prosperity for all and improves people’s daily lives, a modern state that serves citizens, and a free and secure homeland.
