Mazotos residents plan new Saturday protest over desalination unit tender

Residents of Mazotos will hold a protest on Saturday after the Water Development Department put out a tender for subsea pipelines and coastal structures for a mobile desalination unit in the area. They are calling on the President to intervene and say they will step up their protests if they are not heard.

The Mazotos Coast Rescue Initiative Group said the protest would take place at 10.30am on the Mazotos-Kiti road, opposite the petrol station in the village.

“Our village is in danger of being destroyed,” the organisers said in a post. They said residents would defend it to the end, adding that the decisions had been taken without consulting them and were therefore invalid, because Cyprus was a democracy, not a dictatorship. They said they would not allow the area’s natural environment to be destroyed so that the desalination plant could be handed to a private company.

The tender for the subsea pipelines and coastal works has a budget of 6.69 million euros, and bids are due by November 17. The whole project is expected to cost 92 million euros.
