More than 100 drivers speeding and dozens under the influence in overnight patrols

It was another case of ‘never listen, never learn’ as police launched yet another public order campaign in central urban areas across the country, focusing on serious offences but also securing safety on the roads.

Seven individuals were arrested overnight for a number of crimes, including breaking and entering, traffic violations and illegally residing in the Republic.

Almost 600 vehicles were flagged down and more than 800 passengers checked, while 48 establishments underwent inspection, with 12 owners charged.

Results were once again disappointing when it came to traffic offences.

Police recorded a total of 253, out of which 104 involved speeding, while 21 drivers were found intoxicated and a further five positive in a narc test.

Authorities said they would intensify their prevention campaign and increase targeted checks and operations.
