Stay out of firing ranges, police and National Guard warn

Relevant News

Police and the National Guard warned the public to stay out of firing ranges and restricted military areas and not to collect shell casings or other military material, citing the serious dangers involved.

Access is banned not only while military exercises and live firing are under way but also after they have ended, the authorities said in a joint warning.

The presence of shell casings, ammunition or other items on a firing range does not mean the public may collect them, they said. Under the National Guard Law, weapons, ammunition and other military equipment issued by the force are the property of the Republic of Cyprus, and are not considered abandoned because they are lying on military land.

The public is urged not to touch or move any suspicious object and to report it immediately to the relevant authorities, and to follow signs and instructions in military areas.

“Do not risk your life or your safety to collect items from a firing range,” the warning said.

Firing ranges are not places for recreation or for collecting material, the authorities added.
