Rental vehicles in Cyprus would have their first MOT three years after they first go into use, instead of two, under draft regulations the Road Transport Department has put out for public consultation.
The change would apply to rental passenger cars and light goods vehicles, categories M1 and N1. As now, they would then be tested every year.
The department is proposing the change at the request of the Cyprus Car Rental Owners Association, taking into account the mileage the vehicles cover in their first years on the road. The change is expected to help rental companies by cutting the cost and procedures involved in testing relatively new vehicles.
Ordinary private cars are not affected. They will continue to have their first test after four years and then every two years.
The proposal has not yet taken effect, as the amending regulations must still complete the approval process.
