The body of a British man that could not be found at the Nicosia General Hospital mortuary was located there on Wednesday, bearing a tag with someone else’s name. It had never been moved.
A more thorough check of the bodies stored at the mortuary found the man’s body by comparing it with his photograph, Phileleftheros understands. A check of the records also showed that the body had not been registered as the procedure requires.
An inquiry found that a mortuary attendant had made a mistake. It appears that the name tags outside the compartment where the body was kept had been mixed up, which set off the alarm.
The body had been missing since Monday, when a funeral home from Paphos arrived to collect it so it could be repatriated, Phileleftheros reported on Wednesday. Searches over the following two days found nothing, as there was no body under the man’s name in the storage area.
Police had ordered an investigation, and Nicosia CID had been due to take over the case on Wednesday.
The man, who lived in Paphos, died unexpectedly. His body was taken to Nicosia General Hospital for the required post-mortem because the mortuary in Paphos is not working.
