The White House has asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign as US ambassador to Greece, press secretary Katie Zacharia said on Tuesday, according to Reuters.
“We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign,” Zacharia told a briefing, adding that Guilfoyle had been a wonderful asset to the team and that the White House wished her well.
The move came a day after US President Donald Trump said he was considering firing Guilfoyle. “We’re not happy,” he told reporters on Monday.
US lawmakers had previously raised concerns over allegations that Guilfoyle may have threatened to use US influence to undermine the Greek government.
The US embassy in Athens did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment directed to Guilfoyle.
Greece is an important NATO ally of the United States, providing key military facilities for security in the Eastern Mediterranean, and leads an EU maritime mission protecting commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
