Christodoulides says no agreement to limit talks to seven CBMs

President Nikos Christodoulides said on Tuesday there was no agreement to limit his meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman to the seven confidence-building measures (CBMs) mentioned by the UN Secretary-General, as Erhurman had said, and that his 19 proposals remained on the table.

“The agenda is set by mutual agreement and there is no such agreement,” Christodoulides told reporters as he left the Presidential Palace for the meeting in the afternoon.

The 19 proposals were known to both the UN Secretary-General and Erhurman, who had reserved his reply until their next meeting, Christodoulides said. He submitted them before the leaders went to New York, but a meeting there was not possible despite the Greek Cypriot side’s wishes, so they would be discussed on Tuesday, along with any issue Erhurman wanted to raise.

Christodoulides said he was going to the meeting in a very good frame of mind and with political will, to continue the discussion from where they left off at their last meeting before New York, which he described as positive. He hoped concrete positive results would emerge, he said, adding that the Greek Cypriot side feared neither dialogue nor negotiations.
