Economist Tasos Yiasemides, whose name has reportedly been discussed within AKEL as a possible presidential candidate the party could back, said on Monday there was nothing to his candidacy at this stage, adding that everything would come in its own time.
“I read them, I hear them, but there is nothing at the moment,” Yiasemides told Katia Savva on Alpha TV’s ‘Alpha Enimerosi’ programme when asked about the reports. Quoting his grandfather Anastasis, he said everything had its time.
Yiasemides said the presidency was one of the most important issues facing the country and that the policies that could be implemented needed to be examined.
More broadly, he said the country’s good fiscal indicators should be allowed to reach society, and that there should at last be a reform policy so that people could feel the changes.
When there were any developments, they could be discussed, he added.
The next presidential election is due in 2028. AKEL, which won 23.9 per cent in the May 2026 parliamentary election, began internal discussions on a candidate in September. Party officials have said they expect a decision by March 2027 at the latest.
AKEL general secretary Stefanos Stefanou has not ruled out running himself. Andreas Mavroyiannis, who stood with AKEL’s backing in 2023 and lost the run-off to Nikos Christodoulides, has said he would welcome the party’s support again.
