Police arrested an 18-year-old remand prisoner in central Larnaca on Monday, hours after he escaped from custody at the Larnaca District Court.

The young man, of Palestinian origin, was being held for car theft. He had been taken to court from Aradippou police station cells in a police van on Monday morning, along with other detainees, for their cases to proceed.

Once the court proceedings had ended, he was led back to the van to be returned to custody, but somehow managed to get away. As soon as his absence was noticed, the alarm was raised and several patrol cars from Larnaca police division rushed to the area to search for him.

An investigation has been ordered into how he escaped from lawful custody.

He had come to the attention of Larnaca police on previous occasions over thefts and burglaries.
