A 24-year-old driver was arrested in Nicosia in the early hours of Monday after an alcohol test showed a reading of 117 micrograms, more than five times the legal limit of 22, police said.
Traffic police stopped his car on Prokopiou Street during routine checks. He was held in custody and was due to appear before Nicosia District Court on Monday morning, where the case was to be filed immediately.
More than 3,000 drivers have been reported for drink-driving since the start of the year, police said. They said drink-driving is one of the main causes of fatal and serious road collisions, as alcohol impairs a driver’s concentration and performance and increases the risk of a crash.
