Police and health services found no poison after a stray dog and at least five kittens died in Vavla, in the Larnaca hills, the village’s deputy mayor said, although suspicions remain.
“The police and health services that investigated the incident were unable to find poison,” Vavla deputy mayor Giorgos Pattichis told Phileleftheros.
The Cyprus Animal Police opened an investigation after residents complained that animals had been poisoned. According to residents, the dog and kittens, which people in the area fed, were found dead in recent days. It is the second such incident recorded in the small community in the past two years.
The authorities mobilised as soon as the complaint was received on Tuesday, Pattichis said. Lefkara mayor Sofoklis Sofokleous and a member of the Animal Police went to the village on Wednesday.
Lefkara Municipality, the local authority responsible, will take every measure to prevent similar incidents in future, Pattichis said. If the animals were poisoned, he condemned the act with disgust, he added. He also said the community carries out cat sterilisations in the area every year.
Residents welcomed the presence of the mayor and the health services in the village, saying that steps are being taken to create organised feeding areas for the animals.
