DNA tests have identified Mehmet Bayhan as the man whose body was recovered on Saturday from the sunken Filo Jet catamaran off occupied Kyrenia.
The identification was announced in writing by the Turkish Cypriot “prime minister” Unal Ustel. Turkish Cypriot websites, however, reported that Bayhan’s name was made public before his relatives had been informed. The “prime minister’s office” later denied this in a statement.
After the identification, the death toll from the shipwreck now stands at 15, while 13 people remain missing.
Bayhan’s father had recently said he considered his son dead, but asked that his body be found so that he could bury him.
