Trump threatens to ban CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from White House press access

US President Donald Trump declared on Friday that he is banning news outlets CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from White House premises, although administration officials took no immediate operational steps to implement the move.

The targeted news organizations immediately pushed back against the announcement, citing First Amendment guarantees regarding press freedoms.

“CNN stands fully behind our White House team and their fair and accurate reporting. We have a right under the U.S. Constitution to do that reporting without hindrance or interference from the government,” CNN stated. “Should the ban which President Trump threatened go ahead, it would be an illegal assault on that fundamental and constitutionally-protected right.”

POLITICO issued a similar response defending its journalists’ rights to cover the presidency. “POLITICO will continue to fairly report on this White House and future ones. We will vigorously defend our First Amendment rights against any attempt to restrict them,” the outlet stated.

Trump made the initial declaration on Truth Social, accusing the outlets of publishing false stories. “Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America,” Trump wrote.

During a subsequent Oval Office press appearance, Trump defended his decision when questioned by reporters. “Because they’re fake news,” Trump said. “Something is wrong with a country that can allow people to write purposely negative stories. If they want to write them, that’s fine. I don’t have to let them into the people’s house.”

When asked about the mechanics of the restriction, Trump offered minimal procedural details. “It’s a very simple ban. I don’t want them in my office. I don’t want them here. I would say the ban would go as far as you can,” Trump said.

Legal scholars and press freedom advocates warned that barring targeted media groups based on coverage content violates constitutional law. “A ban like this would be flatly unconstitutional,” said Bruce D. Brown, president of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. “The First Amendment is clear that once the White House invites in some journalists, it can’t ban others because it doesn’t like their reporting. This is textbook viewpoint discrimination and will be quickly struck down by the courts if challenged.”

Aaron Terr, public advocacy director at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, reinforced the role of an independent press. “Press credentials aren’t a reward for loyalty to the government,” Terr stated. “A free, even adversarial, press is a sign of our country’s strength.”

Political opposition leaders also condemned the move. “Donald Trump just did what dictators throughout history have done,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer posted on social media. “This is a democracy. You will not be able to manipulate the news or hide the truth.”

The announcement follows previous legal disputes over press credentials during Trump’s tenure. In 2018, the White House revoked credentials for CNN reporter Jim Acosta, which were later reinstated following a federal court ruling. In 2025, administration officials temporarily excluded reporters from The Associated Press from the presidential press pool, prompting an ongoing court dispute despite AP journalists having their credentials restored.
