A body recovered yesterday afternoon during search operations at the sunken catamaran off Kyrenia yesterday appears to belong to Ismail Kurt, one of two “TRNC citizens” who were on the list of missing persons.

Turkish Cypriot newspapers Haber Kibris and Gercek report that, following the necessary examinations, the body was confirmed to be that of Ismail Kurt. It has not yet been announced whether any further bodies have been found.

The catamaran sank on Sunday, August 30, with rescue and recovery operations continuing since, including through the night. The wreck has been located at a depth of around 550 metres, and officials believe some of those still missing may remain trapped inside.

The death toll from the disaster now stands at nine, with 19 people still missing.
