The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) said it received a distress signal on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at 12.13 pm regarding the passenger vessel “Filo Jet”, flying the Turkish flag, which was in danger approximately 5 nautical miles north of Kyrenia.
In a statement, the JRCC said that from the first moment it contacted the Turkish Cypriot side through the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the relevant bicommunal committee, requesting that it be informed that the JRCC was ready to take over the search and rescue operation using available air and naval assets.
“The sole priority was the rescue of human life at sea,” the statement said.
The JRCC added that the Turkish Cypriot side had, at that stage, stated that it did not require assistance from the centre.
