President Nikos Christodoulides has expressed the government’s support for Cyprus air traffic controllers, saying they are working professionally to address the challenges that arise.

Speaking to journalists after the memorial service for heroes Ionas Nicolaou and Kyriakos Kolokasis in Geri, the President was asked to comment on reactions by air traffic controllers in Cyprus and the European Union over ongoing violations of the Nicosia FIR.

Christodoulides praised the work of air traffic controllers, noting that Cyprus manages a large flight information region (FIR) and an important area control centre, which carries increased responsibilities.

“They are doing an excellent, professional job,” Christodoulides said, adding that despite the challenges they continue to carry out their duties with professionalism.

The President stressed that the issue does not concern only the Republic of Cyprus, but also flight safety and many European citizens, noting that actions are therefore being taken at European level.

“We stand by them to address whatever challenges arise,” he said.

Christodoulides also referred to his visit to the new Air Traffic Control Centre, which was inaugurated last year, noting that important work is being carried out by the relevant officials.
