Residents of Mazotos will hold a new protest against plans for a mobile desalination unit in the Petounta area, the newly formed Initiative Group for the Rescue of the Mazotos Coast has announced.
The group said the protest will take place on Saturday, August 29 at 6pm in the community square, near the Church of Agios Georgios.
The organisers said the planned unit is a heavy industrial installation expected to cause significant and irreversible damage to both the land and sea environment, warning that it threatens the area’s ecological balance, degrades the natural landscape and directly endangers residents’ quality of life. They are calling for the government’s decision to be reversed.
Residents believe both the land and sea environment will be affected, pointing to the seabed’s extensive posidonia meadows.
This will be the second protest held by Mazotos residents over the mobile desalination unit. The community has also taken legal action against the Council of Ministers’ decision, seeking a suspension order to halt the works.
