Police in Larnaca arrested a 39-year-old homeless man on Monday night after he attacked one of their officers during what began as a welfare check.

Officers found the man lying on the ground in an open area of the city shortly after 11pm, police said.

The man is a recognised political refugee who has repeatedly been found sleeping on the street, police said.

Police said their initial aim was to ensure his safety. However, when he became aware of the officers’ presence, he reportedly grew enraged, began shouting and making threats, and caused a disturbance in the area.

He then attacked one of the officers at the scene, police said.

The man was arrested and remanded in custody.
