Police arrest seven in overnight Cyprus crackdown, check more than 1,100 people

Police arrested seven people during overnight operations across Cyprus, as officers stepped up patrols and checks in key urban areas.

The arrests were made for offences involving illegal residence in the Republic and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police stopped 825 vehicles and checked 1,166 people travelling in them during the operations. Officers also carried out 64 checks on premises, resulting in nine offence reports.

Traffic checks led to 303 reports for various violations, while police also opened 15 cases involving suspected traffic offences.

Of the reports issued, 114 were for speeding, and police impounded 14 vehicles as part of the investigations.

Officers carried out 365 alcohol tests, resulting in 36 reports, as well as two preliminary drug tests, one of which returned a positive result.

Police said the operations aimed at preventing and combating crime are continuing daily, with an increased police presence, targeted checks and immediate operational action intended to protect the public and maintain public order.
